M6069 - Ikat Dress

I have had this McCall's pattern in my stash for awhile but have never found just the right fabric for it.  During one of fabric.com's recent sales, I spotted the perfect fabric--Ikat rayon jersey.

This dress was truly one of the easiest garments I have ever sewn.  Now, it took me more than the 1hour that the pattern envelope advertises.  I don't even think I can cut out anthing in just 1 hour.  I sewed View A and added the back strap.  I went right by the instructions except that I omitted the pockets.
This dress came about while I was in the middle of another dress project (more on that in a later post).  Unfortunately, I realized I did not have a zipper for the dress and being that it was the 4th of July weekend, there was nowhere open to go buy a zipper.  Being this was the Saturday before the 4th, I knew I could not go without sewing all the way to Tuesday--I would go into withdrawals.  I decided it would be the perfect time to whip out the Ikat dress.

Very cute! I actually have this same fabric in my shopping cart for fabric.com, but i've never ordered fabric online and I'm a little unsure... I'm not very experienced with stretchy fabrics so its hard for me to know if I can handle it...What do you think? Is it a slippery/shiny fabric?

This looks great! I have that fabric in the "other" color, the purple and green. You're inspiring me to get to work on it!

Great choice of fabric for this patter, which really is a winner isn't it? I can't make anything in an hour either, well maybe a pillowcase!

Allison,
This fabric is not really shiny. It is very lightweight, but since is has rayon in it, it is a little wrinkly, but not too bad.

I have never been one for ikat print. It's a bit more Tribal. This Print is an exception. Something you would likely find at Anthro. The pattern is more Geometric and less Blurred than the most ikat. But it's the colors that make the print. I've never seen so many used together in an ikat print. The White Background is also unique.

The pattern of the dress reminds me of Anthro's Powdered Pigment Dress by Tracy Reese. Front and
Back

One address was very long. Hope my HTML works.

It amazes me how fast you can create such a beautiful piece of clothing Rachel. Your fabric choices are always unique and impeccable. You make me want to sew! Ha-ha!

Laura,
Thank you so much for those pics. I had not thought about the colors being so similar. I tried an inspired version of that Powdered Pigment dress awhile back, but it did not turn out quite like I wanted. I have since fixed it and need to get pics up.

Great dress, Rachel. The fabric is just perfect, and you look marvelous in your ensemble.

When I made this dress I eliminated that back strap and stitched little thin ribbon lingerie guards with snaps at the shoulder seamline to keep the dress's shoulders in place. It works great. Just a thought, should you want to make the pattern again.
